Trench Drains: An Overview
Trench drains are surface drainage systems designed to efficiently channel water away from surfaces, collect debris, balance surface loads, and more.
Types of Trench Drains
A. Pre-Sloped Trench Drains
Pre-sloped trench drains feature a built-in gradient, typically ranging from 0.5% to 1%, to naturally guide water flow toward the drainage outlet. These systems are commonly installed in commercial environments such as industrial facilities, sidewalks, and parking lots, where they help minimize debris accumulation.
B. Neutral (Non-Sloped) Trench Drains
Neutral trench drains have a consistent, uniform depth and lack an internal slope. Water flow is directed by external grading and gravity. These drains are ideal for custom installations and are frequently used in residential driveways, pool decks, and warehouse settings.
C. Slot Drains
Slot drains consist of a narrow surface opening rather than a wide grate. Constructed primarily from polymer concrete or stainless steel, they are popular in areas where cleanliness is a priority. Their design reduces clogging and enables easy cleaning via high-pressure flushing. Typical applications include breweries, airports, landscaping, golf courses, and foundation protection, where they also assist in lowering hydrostatic pressure and enhancing basement waterproofing.
D. Catch Basin Integrated Trench Drains
This type of system incorporates catch basins at strategic intervals to collect sediment and debris, preventing blockages in the underground drainage network. This feature extends the system’s service life and enhances performance, making it well-suited for high-traffic areas such as roads, loading docks, and logistics hubs.
E. Polymer Concrete Trench Drains
Made from a composite of resin binders and mineral aggregates, these modular pre-formed systems offer excellent chemical resistance, superior load-bearing capabilities, and enhanced durability. They are widely used in heavy-duty environments like chemical plants, manufacturing sites, and industrial zones.
F. Plastic (HDPE/Polypropylene) Trench Drains
Manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene, these trench drains are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to handle. They are especially suitable for patios, pool decks, water parks, and residential driveways.
G. Stainless Steel Trench Drains
Stainless steel trench drains are designed for industries where hygiene and durability are crucial, such as food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, and laboratories. These systems offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance and can be sterilized to prevent bacterial or viral contamination.
H. Cast Iron Trench Drains
Known for their superior strength and impact resistance, cast iron trench drains are best suited for heavy-load applications like industrial plants, warehouses, loading docks, airports, bridges, petrol stations, and other public infrastructure projects.
